Message You must keep the file flat on the surface as you use it. If you see marks on the surface on one side of the dent only, you are not keeping it flat. Remember, this is not an elbow-grease job, it's a finger-tip job. When you start to see that the file has removed all the protrusions, and is making marks smoothly across the good surface .... stop! Also, you can feel whether the file is sitting flat on the surface, and not on any protrusions. ..... It is possible to do it wrong, but the wire wheel method guarantees you will do it wrong. I can see from the picture that you have done some damage to the surface around the dent. .... And, to add to Gordo's comment, you can cut a file to the right size with a dremel tool.
